Is it true about dreadlocks and dog feces?

I have heard from several reliable sources that a trusty way to make your hair form into dreadlocks suitable for playing in a reggae band is to rub doggy doo doo into one's hair then not wash oneself for an indefinite length of time. If this is true, which breed of dogs work best?
